Why #MeToo Matters

Dec 12, 2018 | Education

You have probably seen #MeToo posted on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter recently. You’ve heard it mentioned on the news or in other media. What is #MeToo really all about, and why does it matter so much?

#MeToo is a movement that started in 2006 but spread virally as a two-word hashtag on social media in October 2017. The purpose is to denounce sexual assault and harassment, and it gained popularity rapidly in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against famed movie producer Harvey Weinstein. Social activist Tarana Burke is credited with starting the use of the phrase Me Too, and it was more widely popularized by actress Alyssa Milano. Since it first began, the movement has brought millions of people together, using the hashtag #MeToo as they each come forward with their own experiences to create awareness about sexual violence that has been allowed to persist in silence for far too long.

#MeToo has been successful in encouraging conversations globally and locally. Teens and parents are talking about #MeToo and starting conversations about sexual violence that had been previously hard to begin. #MeToo is giving our New Mexico teens a great way to start a conversation about sexual violence with their friends and mentors.

In New Mexico there are strict laws that cover types of sexual violence, including sexual harassment, assault, labor laws against employers taking advantage of employees and so on. It Starts With Us is working to educate teens and mentors about their rights and their resources.
